Madonna's Birthday Forecast: Will She Get to Keep Her Baby?

Happy 49th(!) birthday to my adored Madonna! This year, the pop-culture fixture is celebrating amidst some drama (but what else is new?) pertaining to her pending adoption of Malawi boy David Banda. Will she be allowed to keep her son? I calculated her solar return, a birthday chart forecasting the year ahead, to find out what is likely to happen with Her Madgesty's little prince.

The solar return chart (calculated for Wiltshire, England, where Madonna and Guy Ritchie share a country estate with their kids) has Virgo rising and Sagittarius on the Descendant, just like in Madonna's natal chart, which suggests that she will in some sense be in her element this year (even though the solar return Ascendant of 29°52" Virgo does suggest an anxious, urgent need to be in control -- but that kind of is Madonna's element, no?). The SR (solar return) Sun's conjunction to Mercury, the chart ruler, as part of a stellium with Venus and Saturn, further strengthens Madonna's position for the year, making her articulate, appealing and authoritative.

The SR Moon, which represents mothering, is in Libra conjunct the SR Ascendant. This signifies her role as a mother will be at the forefront of Madonna's identity this year; the Moon's placement in Libra could refer to her legal fight for the right to claim David as her child, since the Scales are the sign ruling justice.

Also in the solar return chart, transformative Pluto in the international, multicultural sign of Sagittarius is conjunct the Descendant or 4th house cusp, ruling family and home. This is definitely a time of profound change in Madonna's family life. So, will the shift be for better or worse?

Considering that Pluto and the Descendant are trine the Sun-Mercury-Venus-Saturn stellium in Leo in the 11th house, Madonna's odds look very good indeed. Her fame and status with the public (Leo in the 11th), her wealth (Venus) and her overall clout (Saturn) are all working for her. Factor in the angular Moon, and Madonna looks to be one unstoppable adoptive baby-mama. Mazel tov, Madge!

Madonna's Adopted Son: An Astrological Fit With His New Family?

Can astrology shed some light on the controversy over Madonna's adoption of 1-year-old Malawi David Banda? Familial relationships, both biological and adoptive, are often revealed in the birth chart by resonance between two family members' horoscopes. (An interesting article theorizing on horoscopic "inheritance" can be found on Astrokrishna's blog.) So perhaps David's natal chart contains some insight into his relationship with his new adoptive parents, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Ritchie. Does his destiny lie with his new family, or would he have been better off in his homeland with his biological father?

See David Banda's birth chart (Exclusive to CelebAstroBlogy; no birth time)

Sad to say, the conflict in David's young life is readily apparent in his natal chart. A T-square, or T-shaped configuration, between Venus, Saturn and Neptune (or a grand cross, if you count Mars, which is slightly out of orb) creates a sense of being pulled in different directions. Pursuing one's path may be difficult with this configuration. David may struggle to overcome a sense of being deadlocked as conflicting forces are at odds within him.

More pressure is found in the yod, or "finger of God" configuration, formed in David's horoscope between Mercury, Saturn and Uranus. David may struggle to express himself within the confines of the structure in which he is raised, and could manifest his pent-up frustration (or turn it self-destructively inward) in an outburst via volatile Uranus in Pisces.

These issues notwithstanding, there are some interesting contacts between Madonna's horoscope and her new adopted son's. Both their Jupiters are conjunct in Libra while both their Mars are loosely conjunct in Taurus. Madonna may be a conduit for opportunities for David to broaden his horizons and pursue his ideals. See Madonna's birth chart (Astrotheme)

As David's Uranus sits right on the cusp of Madonna's 7th house of partnership, I can't help but be concerned that the chaos ensuing from his entry into the family could disrupt her marriage. David's Sun forms an out-of-sign conjunction to Guy Ritchie's Uranus, which could suggest that the young boy will push his adoptive dad's buttons. See Guy Ritchie's birth chart (Astrotheme, no birth time) But with his Saturn opposite David's Jupiter, Guy can provide the structure of a paternal force for the young lad; though he may be repressive in some ways, he will be determined to help establish the foundation for David to pursue his dreams.

David may find a strong family ally in big sister and fellow Libra Lourdes, whose Moon in Scorpio conjuncts David's Venus while her Venus in Virgo sextiles it. Look for Lola to be fiercely protective of her new little bro, assuming a close caretaker bond with him. Meanwhile, now-middle child Rocco, with his Leo stellium, will likely find it easy to boss around his eager-to-please Libra little brother. See Rocco Ritchie's birth chart (StarIQ.com)

While David may have some challenges ahead (don't we all), it doesn't seem like his new adoptive family will screw him up any more than anyone else's family does. I hope for the sake of all concerned that the adoption situation is resolved quickly and smoothly so that David's life is not disrupted by further transitions and tugs-of-war. The sooner he achieves equilibrium, the better off this little Libra will be.

Madonna's Adopted Son: His Astrological Chart

With all the controversy around Madonna and Guy Ritchie's adoption of a Malawi boy named David Banda (Ciccone Ritchie), I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the tot's birth chart and find out how he fits in with his new family unit... or doesn't.

First, a note on birth data: As you might imagine, it is not so easy to get access to comprehensive birth records for impoverished Third World peoples from tiny rural villages. Wikipedia gives David's date of birth as September 24, 2005 {Source}, but does not narrow down a town of birth in Malawi. According to the Daily Telegraph, David comes from a village called Lipunga on the border with Zambia but was technically born in Zambia {Source}, but absent any mention of the name of the Zambian village, I have used Lipunga as the birthplace. If anyone comes across more details or different information, please email me or post a comment.

A full reading of David's chart will be forthcoming, along with an analysis of his relationship to his new parents and the current transits stirring up controversy in Madonna's life. But for now, here's David's natal chart to chew on....

Happy Birthday, Dear Madonna! A Personality Profile

It would be difficult to fully express in words how much Madonna means to me. She is the Leo archetype personified yet so much more. On the eve of her 48th birthday, August 16 (I had to check three times to make sure I did that math right, because the woman looks INSANE and I would give anything to have a body like that now, much less at 48), I must, of course, pay tribute to her in astrological fashion.

This personality profile of Madonna based on her natal chart is one I wrote back in 1996, when she was expecting Lourdes (with whom I am obsessed) and just on the cusp of her transition to spiritual mother. But it's a pretty timeless description of her personality, and the predictions I made about her image evolving after the birth of her child were quite apropos, if I do say so myself.

Why, Guy, Why?

As much as I do not want to think of this possibility, the always awesometastic Perez Hilton is again reporting, along with several other blogs, on rumblings of divorce between Madonna and her husband, Guy Richie. Now, I love Madonna fervently and have willfully suppressed any musings about the happiness of her marriage since hearing years ago that she celebrated Guy's birthday with a macrobiotic cake and a three-hour lecture at the Kabbalah Center. I mean, yes, the man is a Virgo and they tend to be neurotically health-conscious, but no one wants to spend a birthday bettering themselves. Anyway, I explore this topic not out of disloyalty to my Madge -- quite the contrary! -- but out of a grave for about her and her family's well-being, and perhaps, it must be admitted, a nascent curiosity about whom she might date next and how cute their babies might be.

Consecutive-sign relationships are always a challenge. It's not that they can never work, but two adjacent wedges of the zodiac will inevitably be on different pages in some fundamental way. It helps if the two have planets in each other's sign. And Madonna is definitely a full-on Leo, but she does have three planets (her Moon, Mercury and Pluto) and her Ascendant in Virgo, Guy's Sun sign. And Guy's Mars is in Leo, very close to an exact conjunction with Madonna's Sun (which should augur a passionate, romantic sex life, though perhaps also some dramatic arguments). His Jupiter is conjunct her Moon and Ascendant, making him a great supporter who encourages her and boosts her self-image. In their composite or relationship chart, the Sun, Venus and Uranus are closely conjunct in Virgo, with Pluto and Mercury also in Virgo but not in on the conjunction action. Guy's birth time is, annoyingly, unknown; his Moon could be either in fiery Aries or stoic Taurus. Either would probably serve him well in terms of standing up to Madonna's Leo willfullness. However, as a mutable Virgo he is likely to be the one who capitulates in any marital confrontation.

Madonna and Guy's composite chart, signifying the dynamic of their relationship, is very interesting. The Sun, Venus and Uranus are all closely conjunct in Virgo, with Pluto also in Virgo seven degrees away. This planetary pile-up suggests a relationship that is extremely close but also extremely volatile. All that Virgo speaks to their iron-fist-run household, with rigid healthy routines (that macrobiotic birthday cake...) and no TV for the kids. But all this obsessive-compulsive Virgo energy has been sorely tested lately, with chaotic Uranus in Pisces opposing the Virgo planets in Madonna and Guy's composite throughout 2005. Disruptive forces have challenged their tightly managed routine, creating a sense of physical and emotional upheaval. This would have been most acute around February 2005, when Uranus first transited these planets, and flared up again in mid-November when Uranus stationed a little over a degree from an opposition to the Ritchies' composite Uranus. Translation: Either they've so far managed to weather the storm, or their marital problems already split them up, but they've kept it under wraps in true Hollywood fashionably-late-breakup-announcement style. I really don't want to believe this, and it's not like she would have a motive for hiding it, such as a new album release or -- never mind! Anyway, if this nightmare scenario is true and poor Lola and Rocco will have to cram yet another baby-daddy play date into their already hectic weekly schedules, I would expect an announcement around the end of March, when transiting Uranus opposes their composite Pluto and long-buried secrets come suddenly to light. Again, I can't stress enough that I hope I am wrong.
